Why I Became a Mormon
I was raised in the Catholic Church and I never went to church growing up. I only went for special occassions like parties, quinceaneras, birthdays, baby blessings, baptisms and for First Communion. Most of my family in Mexico is Catholic and it's just what everyone does. I never really questioned it. My mom never forced me to go to church. She asked me if I wanted go with her but if I said no it was ok. But she didn't go very much either. I think most of Mexican people are Catholic and it part of the tradition. They are very faithful but they don't do the right thing. They don't keep the commandments. They just have faith but they don't act on it. I didn't really think about what was right or wrong because nothing was really prohibited. I liked the times I went to church--I liked the music but it wasn't enough for me. When I came here, I knew that my dad's family was Mormon, and I had gone to church with my grandmother in Mexico when I was younger. I liked it, especially the Primary because it was pretty and big. It was different. When I moved here, I went to church with my grandma because she went to a Spanish-speaking church. I liked it because it was in Spanish but I decided to go in English because my family told me that it would help me learn English. I started taking the missionary lessons and learned many new things like differences between God and Christ, commandments, Young Women values, law of chastity, Word of Wisdom and other teachings. A few weeks later I decided to get baptized because I liked the church and I believed in the things they taught. Since then, over one year ago, I have learned more in-depth about those things and I think I took the right decision because it changed my life.
